چکیده
Soviet Lysenkoism was the darkest period of modern science, and its main product — Michurinist biology — was a collection of absurd theories usually based on anecdotal observations or on a few badly designed experiments without proper controls and without any statistical evaluation of results. However, in the thirties and early forties, Lysenkoists also described (and misinterpreted) some interesting data and observations which could have been real and which might inspire modern biologists to construct testable hypotheses and suggest experiments that could extend our scientific knowledge. Here, I attempt to present an explanation in terms of modern biology of some of those phenomena, namely vegetative hybridization, wobbled heritability, heritability of environmentally induced adaptive modifications and effects of intravariety hybridization of self-fertilizing cultivars. The first two phenomena can be explained on the basis of visualization of hidden Rivista di Biologia I Biology Forum 95 (2002), pp. 259-272.

Effect of salicylic acid on photochemistry and antioxidant capacity in Salvia nemorosa plants subjected to water stress.
Oxidative stress is commonly induced when plants are grown under drought stress conditions. To analyze how salicylic acid (SA) can partly alleviate drought-induced oxidative stress and negative impacts of drought on physiology and growth of Salvia nemorosa plants, we investigated the physiological responses of S. nemorosa to SA application under drought stress. The treatments were composed of Co...

Pistacia atlantica is the most important tree species for the economy of many rural areas in west of Iran, but no effort has been made for the genetic improvement of this species. The aim of this investigation was to study the genetic variation and inheritance of early growth traits in P. atlantica. For this purpose, three wild pistachio populations comprising 60 randomly selected adult trees f...
متن کاملMethyl Jasmonate-Induced Changes in Non- and Antioxidant-Enzymatic Defense in Peppermint (Mentha piperita)
Peppermint (Mentha piperita L.), a herbaceous and perennial species whichis produced mainly for the medicine and food. The peppermint plants were initiated from 10 cm-long rhizome cuttings followed by transferring into pots. The 48 h-treated plants with methyl jasmonate (MJ) concentrations (0, 0.1, 0.5 mM) were assessed for their total soluble proteins, malondialdehyde (MDA), chlorophylls a, b ...
متن کاملEnhanced defense responses in Pythium ultimum-challenged cucumber plants induced by potassium phosphite
Pythium ultimum is one of the major causative agents responsible for damping off disease in cucumber plants. In the present study, the effect of potassium phosphite (KPhi) on defense response of P. ultimum-inoculated cucumber plants was investigated. Different plant growth parameters as well as chlorophyll a content were studied to evaluate the healing effec...
متن کاملVegetative and generative maintenance of self-incompatibility in six accessions of German chamomile
Self-incompatible (SI) plants are able to form ideal mother lines for hybrid crossing in hermaphroditic plants, assuring fertilization from the desired father line. To find out suitable ways to maintain SI was the aim of this study. Among 220 plants of German chamomile (Matricaria recutita (L.) Rauschert) within six accessions SI-genotypes were selected. SI was determined as staying seedless in...
